Why Wonder Woman Matters

0 komentar

Since her debut in All Star Comics #8 released in 1941, Wonder Woman has become the most famous and recognizable female superhero in the world. This feminist icon is a warrior princess and a United Nations Ambassador. She displays extreme intellect and compassion. Princess Diana of Themyscira has also become a part of pop culture. She has been featured on countless merchandise, toys, comics, animated movies and television shows. For some reason (and Im still scratching my head on this one), it took DC Comics 75 years to bring her to the big screen. Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot is currently filming and slated for a 2017 release. We will get our first look at Gal as Diana in Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice, March 25, 2016.

Wonder Woman has had a huge impact on men, women and children for 75 years. But why? What is it about her that we connect to? Why do we love her so much? This article of the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog explores those questions and answers. Before I get to my thoughts and personal experiences, I want to share the thoughts of a fellow Wonder Woman fan. Cosplayer Candy Keane is also the owner of the Three Muses Clothing Boutique in Jacksonville, FL.

"I want to share My first memory of dressing up like Wonder Woman was around 4 years old, in my Underoos. Even then I dressed up my outfit with a lasso and paper tiara and cuffs. That could possibly count as my first “homemade” cosplay. The Wonder Woman TV show was my introduction to strong super hero women and I’m thankful for that role model. My love of Wonder Woman has stayed with me through the years and grown to include all of WW’s various incarnations, but my true love of all things wonder will always start and end with Lynda Carter."   ~Candy Keane (Visit her Official Facebook Page)

I want to say my first exposure to Wonder Woman was the Lynda Carter series but as of late, I find my memory to be a bit jumbled. Im not quite sure if it was the Wonder Woman live action series or the cartoon show Superfriends. In any case, I always found the character to be fascinating. She was beautiful, independent and strong. She was graceful  yet a fierce warrior. She was the most brave and powerful woman I had ever seen. She could hold her own, defend herself and fight along the side of heroes such as Superman. And she had black hair like me! LOL When I was a child I had a collection of Wonder Woman items such as action figures and pajamas. She was important to me because she was teaching me that a girl could be strong and change the world. Women were just as capable as men  and can make a difference.  Wonder Woman didnt just do good in costume. Diana Prince had a job, supported herself and took time out to help others.

Ive been a Wonder Woman fan literally my whole life. Whats great is that both of my parents and my youngest niece are fans too. Its awesome that we can share our love for the Amazon Princess. Witnessing Wonder Woman evolve over the years in media and pop culture has been amazing. I look forward to what the future brings.

Game Review Pokemini

0 komentar
The Pokemini game tells the story of Minis who have traveled to Earth looking for "yummy donuts". The game opens with the tale of the Minis then allows you to pick your own mini character. Once you select your character, you can enter your nickname, your zodiac sign and then the fun can begin! You can change your Minis appearance by purchasing hair, clothing (using donuts) and free edits are available to alter their psychical appearance. You are also given a home which you can decorate. You can visit other Minis in their home and they can visit you. Quests are available and you are rewarded for finding particular items. The game is made by the Cocone Corporation and is now available on iOS and Android devices.

Apple iTunes Store: http://bit.ly/Victoria_Android
Google Play: https://bit.ly/Victoria_iOS

When you sign in everyday, you earn a login stamp and you can use the stamps to win prizes. Outside your home, you are given a tree to water and you earn points and donuts for taking care of it. You can also water other Mini trees when you visit to gain points and donuts. Other ways to earn free donuts is by placing a "slap" on another Minis Slap board, or watching ads for items such as video games or taking product surveys (in which you have to supply your email address). You can meet other Minis by the Jet Set option which will take you to another players home. You can also leave messages on their bulletin board and interact with their furniture. At your home, you can customize it however you like, buy and rearrange your furniture and visitors will pop by. You can even cook and eat tasty treats. You can also give gifts to other Minis however it doesnt come cheap and will cost you 50 donuts. When you level up by obtaining points and donuts you are awarded new items. Your Mini will need to rest when they are tired. They will also need to eat when they are hungry.

I really liked the options for clothing and hair styles in addition to facial features. Most of these options however do cost donuts so you have to save up. The graphics are adorable and the music is delightful. The controls are pretty easy and theres a Tip icon to assist you in the game play if needed. The game is a fun past time. I especially like that you can interact with other gamers from around the world by leaving messages, visiting their homes, giving gifts or even entering a Chat room. I think the price of gift giving is a bit high and I was also confused when I went to purchase a Rose Gown and was told I had to "spin" for it in which I did not get the dress but a hat instead. I am confused on that part and was upset because I had enough money for the dress yet the spin took most of my donuts.

In closing I am still learning my way around this game however it is fun and enjoyable for all ages. I plan to continue playing. The Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog approves and recommends Pokemini!

My Interview with G2A!

0 komentar

Photo by Photos and Designs by Piera.
I have recently been interviewed by G2A.com. They are a global digital marketplace famous for selling game keys online at very low prices and have partnerships with famous youtubers like PewDiePie. I spoke to Julia who asked questions about my charity work with Heroes Alliance and my hobby as a cosplayer. As a company that is well known in the gaming industry for offering amazing games for the geeks they are also into charity work for children. In 2014 G2A.com, as a team of game enthusiasts joined their forces with another partner and raised over 5 million dollars for the Save the Children organization. Thanks to such actions many children were given a better start and an opportunity to be protected from harm. Check out my interview below!

G2A: Tell us something about yourself?

Victoria: My name is Victoria and I have been cosplaying since 2006. My day job is part time Nanny and part time Nursery School Teacher. I run my own birthday party business where I do princess parties. I also work for the non-profit volunteer group, the Heroes Alliance. I have been hired and paid throughout the years by photographers and agencies as a professional  model.

G2A: When did you start cosplaying and what inspired you?

Victoria: I began cosplaying in 2006. I was inspired by a photo of a beautiful cosplayer that my boyfriend showed me. She was at a convention in Japan and was dressed as Rikku from Final Fantasy X-2, which is one of my favorite video games. I was inspired by that photo. The composition was beautiful. The quality of the costume was stunning. She truly breathed life into the character.

G2A: Tell us about the pros and cons of being a cosplayer.

Victoria: Being a cosplayer is creatively liberating. It gives you an avenue to express yourself and your love for a character however you want. The process of putting a costume together is artistic. Its a fun and healthy hobby. Being active in the community, you meet many like minded people and make friends. The friendships formed are the best part. On the negative side, because this hobby is about being seen and photographed, you can be subjected to online bullying which includes racism, sexual harassment and other forms of bullying. Dont tolerate it because you dont deserve it. Block, delete, ban. Do whatever you have to do to flush out the negativity.

G2A: What are the key factors in choosing the best cosplay costume?

Victoria: I can say that the most impressive are those who think outside the box. Also if you bear a strong resemblance to a character, it will make a lasting impression. But theres really no rule book on how to choose the best costume. Just go for what you love and express yourself.

G2A: What is your dream cosplay?

Victoria: I want to be Iron Man!

G2A: Do you have any cosplayer friends that share the same passion for cosplaying?

Victoria: Majority of my friends are cosplayers. The friendships I have made in this community are priceless to me.

G2A: Apart from cosplaying, what are your other hobbies?

Victoria: I am a huge doll collector. I collect Monster High, Bratz, Ever After High, Disney and Barbie dolls. I am actually more passionate about doll collecting that I am about cosplay. I mediate. Meditation is a very important part of my life.  I am the author of the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog where I write articles about the Hispanic Geek Community, feature my Cosplay Galleries, conduct product reviews, convention coverage and opinion pieces.  Im a book worm and love to read. I love spending time with my two beautiful black cats.

G2A:  I know about your charity work for Heroes Alliance. Could you elaborate further on this topic?

Victoria: The Heroes Alliance is a nationwide non-profit volunteer group. We dress as superheroes and volunteer at local Childrens Hospitals and Childrens Charities that focus on the medically fragile or terminally ill. Our goal is to give them a "real life" super hero experience. The Heroes Alliance is celebrating its 10th year and we have branches all over the country. I am the coordinator for the Eastern Pennsylvania branch. I manage my team of fellow super hero volunteers and handle all of the scheduling for events. Heroes Alliance image Heroes Alliance About Heroes Alliance View on www.heroesalliance.org

G2A:  What is your greatest achievement in Cosplaying?

Victoria: Becoming a part of the Heroes Alliance family and chartering the Eastern Pennsylvania branch. Giving back to the community and to children in need is a beautiful experience. You are bringing happiness and hope to those who need it, simply by showing up in costume and spending a few moments with kids. Its a powerful thing.

G2A:  Apart from cosplaying.. is there anything else you do professionally?

Victoria: As I stated before, I have been hired and paid to do commercial modeling. I run my own birthday party business. My day jobs are working in Early Child Hood Education. I do not consider cosplay a profession. Its not a job. Its a hobby.

G2A: I read about your serious accident in 1999, how did you deal with recovery? What advice would you give to people who found themselves in similar situations?

Victoria:  My advice would be not to give up hope. Keep working hard and surround yourself with a strong support group. Dont be afraid to ask for help. Remember that not only do you need healing psychically but mentally and emotionally.

Cosplay Spotlight Roxanna Meta

0 komentar
Roxanna Meta is one of my favorite cosplayers. Her beautifully detailed costumes are stellar and her craftmanship is first class. In addition to being a very talented costumer, Roxanna is also one of the nicest people I have encountered on the interwebs. Roxanna took some time to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about her craft, dealing with trolls, and what she has in store for 2014.

Victoria: How many costumes have you created?

Roxanna: I just now counted seventeen made since about 2004; I actually dont make very many costumes each year.

Victoria: What is your favorite part of costuming?

Roxanna: Wigs! I never accept "just okay" on a wig. Hairstyle is a huge part of accuracy, especially when mimicking a live-action character, and I think a lot of people neglect it or dont know how to approach it. But of course my true favorite part is wearing the costume, feeling sexyfine and proud of my work - does that count?

Victoria: Yes, that count! What is your favorite convention to attend?

Roxanna: At the moment, Dragon Con. It used to be WonderCon, but then WonderCon moved; it used to be San Diego Comic Con, but then Comic Con became overwhelming and impersonal. Now Ive found that Dragon Con best embraces the social aspect of cosplay that I love so much.

Victoria: How did you learn how to sew and create armor?

Roxanna: Books, skilled friends, and online tutorials. I started my cosplay career by buying pieces and modifying them. So back when I could only sew a straight line, I would pick costumes where I had minimal sewing to do, and the rest could be constructed with purchases and my other craft skills like painting. But Ive made sure over the years that each project includes new tasks that Ive never done but Im pretty sure I can figure out, and so Ive built my abilities up step by step and now I can say "psshh yeah, I know some stuff!"

Victoria: Do you accept commissions?

Roxanna: Not at the moment, although I will always listen to a proposal in case it blows my mind. I used to do commissions, but found that I have trouble motivating to work them into my schedule; its best that I just dont do that anymore. I do, however, have an online shop where I sell pieces of my choosing, and thats at http://hausofm.storenvy.com

Victoria: Do you think that the world of cosplay has changed now that its become mainstream?

Roxanna: Well, Im not convinced that mainstream is the right word to use - were still a fringe group! But yes, I think a lot has changed since I started, some for the worse and some for the better. Im looking forward to seeing what develops in another five or ten years. In some ways, I hope cosplays popularity dies down a bit, so participants dont feel like they have to hustle for attention in the crowd (and lets be honest, we all love attention!).

Victoria: What advice would you give to female costumers who have to deal with trolls on the internet?

Roxanna: Hoo boy. Follow your gut. I dont think theres any right way to handle online trouble, or any wrong way. With straight-up trolls, of course, the common wisdom is that the best way is to ignore them (I would amend that to say "and block their asses whenever possible"). In the case of critics and body-shamers, though, theyre not trolling so much as feeling like its important and okay for them to share their opinions on everything all the time. Some women choose to treat those people like trolls and ignore and/or block them, which is valid. I personally only feel right if I call them out whenever and wherever I see them voicing hurtful opinions. Ive gotten into arguments this way, but Ive also made people reconsider their attitudes. Thats enough reward for me to continue calling people out in a way that I feel retains my dignity. This method works best for me.

Victoria: What projects do you have in store for 2014?

Roxanna: I try not to plan too many projects ahead of time, and instead I go with the flow of what feels like fun right now. Plus, I am ALWAYS taking time to make improvements on previously worn costumes before each convention or appearance - I seriously dont consider any of them "finished." That said, my current pet project is, like many other women right now, Elsas ice gown from Frozen. Weve got a great big Facebook group going and were all sharing tips and progress, and its so much glittery fun! This project will take me a long time, though, I have a feeling. Its pretty ambitious for me and Im not the kind of person who marathons sewing unless I have to, so I work slowly, bit by bit.

Victoria: Where can people contact you and view a port of your work?

Roxanna: My Facebook page is Haus of Meta, and I do post there regularly (although of course Facebook is terrible and limits how much of your content people see on their walls; so its not ideal, but thats the current most popular option so Im rolling with it). Im also on Tumblr, and although I post a lot of different content there daily, my homepage at http://roxannameta.tumblr.com has an option to click on "Photos of Me," and youll see all my posts that show my work!

New York Comic Con 2012

0 komentar
This year marked my second time attending the New York Comic Convention held at the Javits Center October 11th-14th. I attended the show Friday , Saturday and Sunday and debuted two brand new costumes; Huntress and Snow White. The Big Apple is one of my favorite cities and I looked forward to returning along with my event photographer, Brian Green.

Unfortunately I spent only about an hour at Fridays show due to transportation and traffic delays. I dressed up as Sydney Savage and had the opportunity to take pictures with J. Scott Campbell along with Ally as Abbey Chase. Mr. Campbell was very nice, posed for a fun picture and said he liked our costumes. I was also asked by an employee to pose at the Kotobukiya booth for their website. My photographer and I stopped by the Legendary Entertainment booth where we received free promotional t-shirts and a  necklace lanyard. We ran into some friends and I also received my new Huntress costume (the mask would be delivered Saturday). That night we attended a private party where we had dinner with friends. I retired early that evening because of a sinus headache I had throughout the day.

On Saturday morning I had to make a run to Kmart to purchase a black sports bra for Huntress. The mask was delivered by my friends Carlos Blanchard and Courtney Rose of Rage Custom Creations (Rage Custom Creations is also responsible for the entire Huntress ensemble). The crowds were massive on Saturday, so much so that it was rather upsetting. It was nearly impossible to stop and enjoy anything on the showroom floor. The crowds consistently knocked and pushed people over. Cosplayers were blocking entrances and exits to pose for photos and we couldnt find Artist Alley. We ended up leaving the show and returned to our hotel room to recharge. In all honesty we were debating on weither we should return at all. The crowds were San Diego crazy in terms of chaos. After catching up with Candy and Brema of Three Muses Clothing in the lobby of our hotel, we decided to make another try for it. With map in hand, we found Artist Alley and ended up having a ball. We spent time with several friends including Dustin Dorough of Hospital Heroes and Iggy Cosplay. I also got to see amazing artist and friend Billy Tucci , legend George Perez and met Young Justice Comic artist Christopher Jones. I was delighted to be asked for a photo by a gentleman who introduced himself as Joe Staton, the original costume designer for Huntress! He complimented my costume and my portrayal of the character. I was stopped at the Kotobukiya booth once again and was asked to pose with their Huntress statue. Saturday ended at the con with a quick shoot with Adam Jay of Superhero Photography.   That evening Brian and I had some New York pizza with Candy and Brema and we all headed to Times Square for some fun at Toys R Us and the Disney Store.

Sunday was another day to debut a new costume that was sponsored by a friend; Snow White. I was really excited about this one because I had conquered my fear of facing racist criticism. I have seen comments online during my six years of cosplay where people have criticized me simply because I am Hispanic. Race isnt an issue for me when it comes to choosing characters I want to portray and it angers me when someone says  I cant do something because of the color of my skin. When selecting Snow White as my next character, I knew that it may cause attacks from people best described as racists. At first I was troubled but it soon melted away. I will not allow anyone to ruin my hobby of costuming and I certainly dont care about the opinions of those who cant see past the color of my skin. They can shove their racist complaints up their big, fat hairy butts for all I care. On Sunday we took an Archery Lesson courtesy of the Tomb Raider team and took a photo with a life sized Alien courtesy of Sega. We took a tour of Artist Alley where I had a nice chat with artist Jamie Tyndall and was asked to pose with the Middle Eastern Magazine Amor. We ran into friend and artist Eric Basaldua and caught up with some friends before we had to return to the hotel and make our way back home.

The show started out rough with all of the traffic delays getting to New York City and arriving extremely late. Factor in the massive aggressive crowds along with the other stresses of convention life such as wardrobe malfunctions and drama, and it can add up to a pretty miserable experience. Im happy to report that things indeed took a turn for the better and we ended up having a lovely time. Most of that is because of the wonderful people I have the privilege of calling my friends. I am undecided if I want to attend next years show. As I stated in my DragonCon report, Im weary of the big industry shows and favor events such as DragonCon, MegaCon and Wizard World Philadelphia. My last show for the year will be a local one in November. After that, I am unsure as to what shows I shall attend in 2013 (although DragonCon and Wizard World Philly is most likely a definite, yes).
