Why Wonder Woman Matters

0 komentar

Since her debut in All Star Comics #8 released in 1941, Wonder Woman has become the most famous and recognizable female superhero in the world. This feminist icon is a warrior princess and a United Nations Ambassador. She displays extreme intellect and compassion. Princess Diana of Themyscira has also become a part of pop culture. She has been featured on countless merchandise, toys, comics, animated movies and television shows. For some reason (and Im still scratching my head on this one), it took DC Comics 75 years to bring her to the big screen. Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot is currently filming and slated for a 2017 release. We will get our first look at Gal as Diana in Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice, March 25, 2016.

Wonder Woman has had a huge impact on men, women and children for 75 years. But why? What is it about her that we connect to? Why do we love her so much? This article of the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog explores those questions and answers. Before I get to my thoughts and personal experiences, I want to share the thoughts of a fellow Wonder Woman fan. Cosplayer Candy Keane is also the owner of the Three Muses Clothing Boutique in Jacksonville, FL.

"I want to share My first memory of dressing up like Wonder Woman was around 4 years old, in my Underoos. Even then I dressed up my outfit with a lasso and paper tiara and cuffs. That could possibly count as my first “homemade” cosplay. The Wonder Woman TV show was my introduction to strong super hero women and I’m thankful for that role model. My love of Wonder Woman has stayed with me through the years and grown to include all of WW’s various incarnations, but my true love of all things wonder will always start and end with Lynda Carter."   ~Candy Keane (Visit her Official Facebook Page)

I want to say my first exposure to Wonder Woman was the Lynda Carter series but as of late, I find my memory to be a bit jumbled. Im not quite sure if it was the Wonder Woman live action series or the cartoon show Superfriends. In any case, I always found the character to be fascinating. She was beautiful, independent and strong. She was graceful  yet a fierce warrior. She was the most brave and powerful woman I had ever seen. She could hold her own, defend herself and fight along the side of heroes such as Superman. And she had black hair like me! LOL When I was a child I had a collection of Wonder Woman items such as action figures and pajamas. She was important to me because she was teaching me that a girl could be strong and change the world. Women were just as capable as men  and can make a difference.  Wonder Woman didnt just do good in costume. Diana Prince had a job, supported herself and took time out to help others.

Ive been a Wonder Woman fan literally my whole life. Whats great is that both of my parents and my youngest niece are fans too. Its awesome that we can share our love for the Amazon Princess. Witnessing Wonder Woman evolve over the years in media and pop culture has been amazing. I look forward to what the future brings.

Featured in Latina Magazine! Win an autographed copy!

0 komentar
Back in May I traveled to the Big Apple to shoot the "Real Women" feature for Latina magazines September 2011 issue. The issue was recently released and I can be seen on page 66, modeling a skirt appropriate for a petite frame. I am beyond thrilled; this is my first feature in a national fashion magazine and a big step in my modeling career! Whats even better is how proud my family is for appearing in a magazine dedicated to our culture. The best response was from my two nieces; they squealed when we picked up the issues and asked me to autograph their copies! That made my heart soar seeing their excitement and knowing that they are proud of their Aunt Vicki.

I love how things in life seem to work out. The universe works in mysterious ways. I was offered to appear in a magazine earlier in the year but you had to PAY for your "space" in the issue and I would have to pay additional prices to take photos for the theme they wanted. I would literally be spending hundreds of dollars to be in a magazine I never heard of. Wheres the accomplishment in that (paying your way into a publication)?  Id be embarassed to tell people I had to buy my way in. I passed and instead worked hard to earn an even better opprotunity. Looks like I made the right descion.

So to celebrate, Im holding a contest where the winner will receive an autographed copy of the September issue of Latina (with the stunning Zoe Saldana on the cover). All you have to do is show your fan appreciation for the cosplay girl; whether you submit artwork, create a You Tube video slide show, make a cosplay girl Barbie or action figure, create a t-shirt, comic strip, whatever you want! Just keep it clean and be creative! LOL Contest begins Tuesday, August 23rd and ends Friday September 23rd. You can email submissions to: cosplay.girl@yahoo.com

This is my fun way of saying thank you for your love and support throughout the years. Good luck!

Cosplay Survey

0 komentar
Recently a Cosplay Survey has been circling around on Facebook. The questions seemed interesting and rather than fill it out and tag people on my personal account, I decided to instead share it on my Blog.

1 . Your first cosplay?
Aerith Gainsborough from the video game Final Fantasy VII.

 2. How many costumes have you done?
 Thirteen.

3. Your most recent cosplay?
Japanese Vocaloid Hatsune Miku.

 4. Your favorite cosplay?
Its always hard to choose just one but I would have to say Catwoman. Ive loved her all my life and have been with her throughout her many incarnations. The costume is comfortable and sexy. My Catwoman cosplay is featured in a cosplay calendar with proceeds going to the American Red Cross: http://angryweb.net/2012/01/10/angry-girls-2012-calendar-now-on-sale/  I also love Selinas heated affair with The Batman and her dangerous lifestyle.

 5. The character you have cosplayed that is most similar to you (if none that you have cosplayed, then one that you will cosplay)?
Oh geeze, I dont know! Obviously Im not from Krypton and Im not an enslaved princess on Tatooine! All of the characters Ive cosplayed are strong characters and a little fun so Id like to think Im a little like all of them.

6. Your cosplay plans for the rest of the year (if you have no more for this year, then do next year!)
Im doing something a bit different and am cosplaying non super powered characters such as Lois Lane and Pepper Potts. Ill be doing joint shoots with a Superman and Tony Stark cosplayer. Ill be debuting Monster High character Cleo. I would love to squeeze in Slave Princess Jasmine but we will see if I have the time.

 7. The dream cosplay that might just happen?
Huntress!

 8. The dream cosplay that will never happen?
Never say never! Anything is possible. I dont limit myself.

 9. Something cosplay-related that you will never do (eg. crossplay, cosplay from a certain series).
Im personally not into crossplay but am not against it. However you wont see me doing it.

 10. Your cosplay idol?
"Idol" is a bit of an odd term. I can tell you who I love, respect and admire; Iggy Cosplay, Han Pan, Lucid Cosplay, Danny Kelley, Jonathan Carroll and Margie Cox.

 11. Your cosplay specialty (ie. something that seems to apply to a large amount of your cosplays, it could be a specific series, or a common feature in their appearance, such as glasses).
DC Comics characters. Its pretty obvious Im a big fan of the DCU.

12. Your cosplay-making habits (eg. singing while working on cosplay):
I need peace and quite when Im working on something.

 13. Your least favourite thing about cosplay?
The phonies who dont know anything about the character their dressed as and only do this for attention. Stalkers are annoying too.

 14. Do you belong to any cosplay groups?
My girlfriends and I made a splash at the 2010 Philadelphia Comic Con aka Wizard World Philly as the Gotham City Sirens. I was also asked to be Catwoman for another Gotham City Sirens group for an upcoming show.

 15. What events have you cosplayed to? Future event plans?
Ive been to the San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con,
Wizard World Philly, Baltimore Comic Con, Zenkaikon and Monster Mania. As for future shows...wait and see!

16. What is your best cosplay memory?
Being offered a job as an official Slave Leia model.

 17. What is your worst cosplay memory?
Some guy kept calling me "Supergirl" when I was dressed as Wonder Woman. I felt embarassed  not for me, but for HIM and had to correct him! Also I had to tell a very rude individual off when he got angry I wouldnt grant his photo request (because I was on the phone).

 18. Have you won any cosplay awards?
Ive received titles. The Modern Tokyo Times and Axiom Magazine named me the "Queen of Cosplay".

19. Your best cosplay derp photo?
When I was Black Canary my choker fell off. Does that count? Probably not...

20. Have you worn cosplay in a regular situation?
I sometimes take certain items and wear them out like my Black Canary or Zatanna jacket. Ive also worn my Wonder Woman and Belle wig out.

 21. Your most expensive cosplay?
Slave Leia and Wonder Woman. Each costume is worth over $300!

 22. Your most comfortable cosplay and most uncomfortable cosplay?
My most comfortable would be Catwoman. Most uncomfortable is Hatsume Miku. The wig and boots are heavy.

23. The cosplay you put the most effort into?
Hatsune Miku. Between the wig, makeup and costume it takes me over an hour to get everything on!

24. Any unfinished costumes? Will you ever finish them?
I currently have an Alice: Madness Returns cosplaying lying around. I really need to get the ball rolling and do a pro shoot with it!

25. How many wigs do you own? Which is your favorite?
Eight wigs and one ponytail extension.I love them all! I can change my hair color whenever I want!

26. Where do you work on your cosplays and where do you store them when they’re done?
I work on them in the bedroom. The wigs are all on mannequin heads. Costumes and accressories are in a giant bin in my closet. Footwear is with my normal shoes.

 27. What is your favorite cosplay item?
My Wonder Woman bracelets.

 28. Cosplay peeves/things you are particular about?
Half assed cosplays.

 29. Something you want to improve on for future cosplays?
I would love to get over my fear of sewing machines and start making my own costumes!

30. Cosplay-related work you are most naturally talented at (ie: sewing, prop-making, wigstyling, etc)?
Im good with getting the hairstyles right weither it be purchasing and styling a wig, using my natural hair or adding hair extensions. Ive also become pretty good with makeup.

Real Life Latina Superheroes

0 komentar

Today marks the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th-October 15th). My third and final article celebrating Hispanic Culture features Teresa Waters and Evelyn Santiago. Both ladies are coordinators for the Heroes Alliance, a nationwide non-profit volunteer group whose mission is to bring a "real life" superhero experience to medically fragile and terminally ill children. Evelyn also serves as a Council Woman for the Heroes Alliance. These beautiful and talented women took some time to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about giving back to their community, the difference between cosplay and charity work and their message for other Hispanics in the geek community.

Victoria: You are both coordinators for the Heroes Alliance. What states do you represent?
Teresa: Texas.
Evelyn: Central Florida.

Victoria: What made you decide to get into charity work?
Teresa: I have always enjoyed giving back to my community, as my family and peers in my life demonstrated to me. The most generous moments in my life, which inspire me to give, was the Puerto Rican community picnics and holiday parties my mom would take us to. We would all share gifts of music, dance, food, cooking, games and joy. Those moments of community are some of the most happiest moments in my life, especially while my dad was out on deployment.
Evelyn: Having been hospitalized (for one reason or another) throughout my life Ive learned how being constantly sick can affect a persons state of mind. Since childhood I had Wonder Woman as my source of strength whether it was from gifts received by loved ones or watching the Lynda Carter series. I use Wonder Woman to give back to my community and as a way to inspire others to fight and/or overcome whatever illness or disability they may have.

Victoria: Had you ever done any volunteer work prior to joining the Heroes Alliance?
Teresa: Yes, I started with girl scouts through military housing and always was involved in something throughout my extracurricular school activities. In college, I was a member of Kiwanis and that is where I met my husband. We were very active with the Hampton Roads Special Olympics track and field days and enjoyed the aspects of play and celebrating life the most at those events.
Evelyn: Yes, I have always been active in my community, whether it was coaching a youth cheerleading squad, raising money for our Veterans or organizing events for military families.

Victoria: Which costume would you say is a favorite among children at the events you volunteer for?
Teresa: Black Widow, which is surprising to me as how popular a hero she is in Texas. I have to agree that shes pretty inspirational. She is brave, is clever, and overcame incredible abuse to rise above her need for revenge and healed herself by living a good life with her new family. I am always amazed at children and their level of understanding such of complex details of character in those that most inspire them (and seeing little boys jig for joy when Black Widow is around... Im still amused and mystified as to why this hero speaks so much to the hearts of both boys and girls alike.) I love everything Black Widow represents as a hero and I am very happy that children feel the same.
Evelyn: At the moment, I only have my (Lynda Carter) Wonder Woman costume to wear at events. I have to say that most of time the moms are more impressed with it than anyone else. Lol

Victoria: Can you tell me what is the difference between charity work and cosplay?
Teresa: Charity work is so refreshing to me and such a joy for others, I really cant help but to focus on this fact; bringing mercy and comfort to those who need a reminder that life is always changing and we are never alone. I want nothing more than to make a charity work event be an uplifting experience for others. In cosplay I really just think of doing my best version of a character as my way of thanking the character creator and artists for creating someone I appreciate, and its a magical experience for me and my ego. I dont get as much joy out of cosplay as I do with charity costuming through Heroes Alliance Texas.
Evelyn: Charity work for me is simply bringing joy to others in moments when they need it most. Using Wonder Woman for the greater good is extremely rewarding. Cosplay allows me to explore the different layers, versions or interpretations of Wonder Woman. I get to play her in ways that others may not have thought of while still staying true to who she is at the core.

Victoria: Do you have a favorite memory while volunteering?
Teresa: Yes, definitely the day I saw an amazingly humble, handsome man across the field throwing a softball back to me at a Special Olympics Track and Field day. The sky opened up, time slowed down, and I thought to myself that this guy is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with because he makes everyone feel important. He always is inspiring me to be better and after 22 years with him hes never let me down. We still volunteer together.
Evelyn: A 6 year old little girl going through chemo had only one arm and asked if she could hug me. I said "Of course." She said that she could only hug with her left arm cause she was missing her right arm. I told her that one armed hugs were my favorite and she squeezed me with all the strength she could muster. I still tear up thinking about how precious she was with me in that moment.

Victoria: During this time of Hispanic Heritage Month what would you like to say to other Hispanics in the geek community who may be interested in giving back?
Teresa: Giving is a huge part of our Native American heritage. Some may not realize how important all those days of babysitting your siblings or cousins were, or sharing your joy and lessons learned in life to your familia were, but they were! Sharing our talents and joys is a big tradition in all Hispanic communities, and teamwork. I see how enthusiastic Hispanics are to always help and smile, we are never afraid of hard work, its a natural talent. We are a gift to America and the world, and we shine with an ingrained hospitality few others still practice, so please dont be afraid of volunteering in some way using your talents of costuming. Just remember how much joy it was the last time you did something for another, keep the traditions of storytelling alive, and know that those gifts of hospitality and joy are a small aspect of our Hispanic Heritage that makes our race so great. Share and know that you will be demonstrating this while keeping such traditions of our ancestors alive in a new way that everyone can appreciate.
Evelyn: Find a cause (or two or three) that youre passionate about. Give of yourself and your time selflessly. Spread hope to those who need it. Go into it with an open heart and be prepare to be inspired in return. Always remember that super heroes are strong and that strength is meant to be shared.
