Cosplay Spotlight Spencer Doe

0 komentar
Cosplayer and artist Spencer Doe has been making a splash in the cosplay world with his multiple Batman costumes and infamous Predator. Not long after conducting this interview, I had the pleasure of meeting Spencer in person. Not only is he incredibly talented but he is also one of the nicest people Ive had the pleasure of meeting. Spencer took some time for an interview with the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about his craft, future costumes (did someone say Man of Steel?) and cosplaying with his lady love, Nicole Marie Jean.

Victoria: When did you begin the hobby of costuming?

Spencer: I first started costuming back in 2007-2008.

Victoria: You have a large variety of costumes from movies and comics. Can you tell me about the construction of your Predator?

Spencer: The predator was sculpted from scratch by my good friend Gene. It was a pretty large project. We spent about 6 months creating two suits. The good thing about the Predator is the costume can evolve. Youre not limited to anything. So you can add details as you go along. It is basically a torso and leg section thats held on with suspenders, separate hands and feet. A neck ring and then a open faced mask with a bio mask attached. It is probably the most uncomfortable costume ever devised, but it still is fun to wear.
Victoria: Are you more partial to the DC or Marvel Universe?

Spencer: I am partial to DC. BATS all the way baby.

Victoria:  Your stunning girlfriend Nicole is also a well known cosplayer. Is it fun having a partner to dress up with and collaborate on costumes?

Spencer: I love having my partner do this with me. We shoot ideas back and forth and do couples costumes. She really is the greatest thing thats ever happened to me for this and many other reasons.
Victoria: Fan boys are known to get a bit too touchy with female costumers. Have you ever had to experience this with your lady? Have you ever had to step in?

Spencer: They generally dont mouth off in person with me standing right there. She is pretty tough herself and can hold her own. It does happen online though and sometimes that bugs me. We both love this hobby and dont let it hinder us in anyway though. Like my buddy Keith Carter said about cosplay women, there are guys out there that look at her and other girls and see their dream; a gorgeous geek, and shes bringing comic fantasy to life for these people. Its the quiet lurkers that you have to be mindful of lol...
Victoria: What is your favorite costume you have created?

Spencer: My fav costume so far because of the reaction is my Arkham Bat suit. Its funny to see grown men walk up and timidly ask for a photo.

Victoria: What costumes do you have planned for the future?

Spencer: I have Man of Steel Superman, Spawn, Venom, Colossus, Goliath from Gargoyles, Azrael and a couple others all planned at some point.
Victoria:  How long did it take to construct your Christian Bale Batman suit?

Spencer: The Bale batsuit is actually one of UD replicas Dark Knight suits. I had a latex version and it just wasnt comfortable and never flowed right with the posing I was doing. The UD suit zips right up and is a dream to wear. The other components were made by me and my friend Ed. The cowl by none other than Shawn Reeves of Reevzfx.com.

Victoria: Will you be doing any more Batman variants?

Spencer: I will be doing the new Batman Arkham Origins suit. I will be doing all of the armor on that and putting it over a base suit. The only thing I wont be making is the cowl.

“Code Black” should be pronounced dead

0 komentar
A new television series called “Code Black” debuted last night on CBS. The show’s name supposedly means the emergency department has too many patients and not enough staff. In my over 40 years in medicine, I’ve seen many busy, understaffed EDs but never heard anyone call it a "Code Black."

There is the usual array of standard medical characters—the inexperienced new residents on their first day at work, the savvy nurses, and the cocky, overconfident attendings. This one has a few twists. The world-weary head nurse is a Hispanic man, and the headstrong know-it-all attending is a woman, Dr. Leanne Rorish. She has early conflict with the handsome, more cautious Dr. Neal Hudson, but I see romance in the future should this show manage to stay on the air.

It takes 5 people to push an empty gurney at Angels Memorial
The show started off with a gunshot wound to the neck that the docs had to retrieve from a car which had been abandoned in the hospital parking lot. Although no one had been putting pressure on the damaged carotid artery for an undetermined period of time and blood was visibly spurting out of the wound, the patient pulled through the resuscitation thanks to Dr. Rorish who replaced all his blood with cold IV fluid. She spiced up the resuscitation by asking the new residents questions about what she was doing.

A man with head trauma and a Glascow Coma Score of 3 was brought in and declared brain-dead on the spot. The transplant team was on its way in. Apparently Angels Memorial Hospital has no brain death protocol.

Another man came in with expressive aphasia due to a stroke, received tPA, and promptly woke up and told his wife he loved her. That’s not the way it works.

My favorite vignette was the arrival of a young boy who was short of breath. Learning that he was Norwegian, Dr. Rorish immediately diagnosed a pneumothorax and assigned an unsupervised new resident to insert a chest tube. He of course was a bit nervous. It was touch and go for a while, but he eventually got the job done. The patient was remarkably calm despite not receiving any local anesthesia which, by the way doesn’t work too well for chest tube insertions anyway.

In the midst of all the chaos, Dr. Rorish fired one of the new residents, a woman who disobeyed her by ordering a urine toxicology screen on a patient who was discharged and later determined to be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

I won’t bore you with the details but the fired resident somehow ended up going in an ambulance to get the patient at her home. On the way back to the hospital, they got stuck in traffic. Drs. Rorish and Hudson talked the resident through a cesarean section which she performed in the ambulance without any assistance.

Did I mention that Dr. Rorish was doing a burr hole on a patient with an epidural hematoma while all this was going on? This scenario was plausible since it can often be difficult to get a neurosurgeon to come to the hospital.

At this point, Id had enough.

Here’s an idea that I’d like to pitch to the networks. It’s a show about the fast-paced world of nursing homes, and it’s called “Code Brown.” For those of you who don’t know, a Code Brown is called whenever a patient poops so much that it takes four people to clean up.

ADDENDUM: I had heard about more crazy stuff in the second episode of Code Black. Against my better judgment, I watched it. To read my review of that one, click here.

Black Female Cosplay Guide

0 komentar
When I began cosplaying in 2006, I recall encountering another newbie cosplayer on the Internet. She expressed her frustration on the lack of Black characters there was to choose from. Many of us told her she could cosplay whomever she wanted but the girl said she preferred to cosplay characters within her race. This recently gave me the idea to create a Black Cosplay Character Guide for both males and females (just in time for Black History month). Now before anyone asks why a Latina is writing this article, I want to make my intentions clear. I am not limiting anyone. My goal to is to help those who are exploring options within their race.

In my early days of cosplay I must admit, I didnt have much help. Although I reached out veteran cosplayers, I found myself very much on my own. As the years passed, I met some amazing cosplayers who were more than willing to help and accept me. The costume community has given me so much and now that I have the experience, I am eager to give back. I have gathered characters and reference pictures of Black female characters from Sci-Fi, comics, cartoons and movies. In part 2 of this article, I will focus on Black Male characters. Below is my list, in no particular order.

1. Martha Jones - "Dr. Who"

~~~~~~~
2. Princess Tiana - "Disneys The Princess and the Frog"
~~~~~~~

3. Uhura - "Star Trek" (Classic and Modern)

4. Storm - "X-Men" (Comic and Movie variant)

5. Vixen - "DC Comics"

Cosplay Spotlight Jessica Carroll

0 komentar
The lovely Jessica Carroll is a well known talent within the cosplay community. She has been practicing the art of costuming all of her life and it shows in her exquisite work. Jessica took some time to chat with the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about the many changes made to Harley Quinn throughout the years, her love for crafting, attending conventions and dressing up with her fellow cosplayer husband, Jonathan Carroll.

Victoria: How long have you been in the hobby of costuming?

Jessica: Gosh all my life? I have always made costumes for something. When I was younger I played dress up as part of my daily routine. As I got older I did theatre and worked extensively on costumes there. The first costume for a play I can remember was in 5th grade. My first convention in cosplay I was in high school, 10th grade I believe. My first costume was Queen Beryl with my best friend as Mistress Nine.

Victoria: What was the very first convention you attended? What costume did you wear?

Jessica: The first convention I attended was Megacon. I was 15. I didnt costume, I had no idea what cosplay was or really what to expect from a convention. I wore my sailor moon tshirt, jeans, and my hair in odangos. You know, just like a good weeaboo.

After that, the next year my best friend and I decided to costume. We never wanted to go to a con without the full experience ever again. We did Queen Beryl and Mistress 9, Eriya and Naria from Escaflowne the movie and then goth punk school girls on Sunday I think.

Victoria: How can people contact you for commissions and view a portfolio of your work?

Jessica: For commissions the best thing to do is hit me up on my facebook https://www.facebook.com/supernovago or you can head straight to my etsy to see what I have up for sale. www.etsy.com/shop/SupernovaCostuming    I have some other projects I work on as well including geeky bridal accessories that I make with my mother in law www.etsy.com/shop/UniquelyYoursBridal

As for a portfolio, Im so bad about keeping my own personal projects up on my facebook, but I try to post plenty of commission progress photos.

Victoria: You have a large variety of impressive costumes and creations under your belt. Youre best known for your amazing Harley Quinn. What is it about the character that attracts you to her?

Jessica: Harley has always been a favorite character of mine. When I was younger I watched the tar out of the first and 2nd Batman movies and the Animated Series. The Joker was my spirit animal as a kid, I loved him. I think it was because he represented the fact that I knew clowns were evil...he embodied what I always knew to be true about them. I remember the first episode I saw with his girlfriend, Harley Quinn. I lost my mind. I needed anything I could get my little hands on, which at the time wasnt much for Harley. However, as I got older and started to delve into psychology, I grew to hate the two of them together. Their relationship disgusts me. I think for me, Harley is the friend I always wanted to see get away from her crappy boyfriend. I root for her because I know she can be strong and independent, but she never seems to truly get on her own two feet.
Haha I guess that still doesnt explain why Im drawn to her...really I dont know, maybe its that I can relate in a lot of ways, at least to my early 20s and bad choices in guys growing up. I found my happy ending, I want her too. Plus, she has hyenas and style...and we both study psychology.

Victoria:  Harley has gone through an enormous amount of hair and wardrobe changes over the years. Whats your favorite look for her? Whats her worst?

Jessica: I dont know if she has a look I absolutely hate....I really wasnt happy with the Suicide Squad look but it grew on me. I think the least practical is her injustice outfit or the Nurse from Arkham Asylum...that one is probably my absolute least favorite. Her best is hands down her original. Its sexy without her boobs popping out everywhere.

Victoria: How do you feel about the changes made to the character in the New 52?

Jessica: I stopped reading Suicide Squad because I was getting bored with it. I dont hate every choice they have made for her...but a lot of them I dislike. The main one is her bleached skin, to me thats ridiculous. Oh and the clown car joke about her vagina was pretty awful too.

 Victoria:  How did you and your husband meet?

Jessica: Jonathan and I met on myspace lol at least thats where we first talked a little. The first convention we met face to face was Dragoncon 2008. We both went through some life changes and kept in vague touch via myspace and the following year at Megacon we actually hung out and fell head over heels. We didnt start dating for a few months.

Victoria: Whats your favorite husband/wife couple costume youve done?

Jessica: Our genderbent Harley and TDK Joker. I love it.

Victoria: What plans do you have in the future in regards to cosplay and professional modeling?

Jessica: For professional modeling Im trying to get the site I co own to grow. I want to keep creating a quality product but would like to be able to move more behind the scenes, make costumes and manage the site more than have to model. For costuming? I want to start breaking away from accurate pieces and more creative. Some of the most inspiring costuming artists to me are Catherine Jones of GSTQ Fashions and the lovely artists over at Firefly Path. They break the mold in terms of creating and I want to do that. I dont want to be trapped in the panels of a comic book with my costumes, I want to break the mold.

Victoria: Which costume took the most work to create?

Jessica: Hmmmmmmm I guess Harley takes the most time out of my pieces because Ive redone the suit several times. Though I do think that working on Sailor Uranus and the amount of nitpicking that will go into it, its going to be a bit time consuming. Coming up I have Enchantress as well which will incorporate a fully boned corset and leather so that will be quite the project.
Thank you Victoria.
