Why Parental Supervision of Minors Cons is Important

0 komentar
Youve all heard the story of the 17 year old girl who was found bloody and unconscious at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. At first reports stated that she was attacked and sexually assaulted but it was later confirmed by  the San Diego Police Department that no such thing had occurred. She had in fact fell while attempting to climb a 6 foot gate and was discovered by the pool of the Marriott Hotel at around 1am. Throughout this entire ordeal I have repeatedly asked myself the same question: where were her parents?

Ive noticed an increasing trend throughout the years as conventions have become more popular. Parents drop their kids off and leave. When did a Comic-Con become a Day Care Center? Do parents not realize that the organizers of these shows are not legally responsible for their children? Arent they the least bit curious as to where their kids are going and whom they are spending time with? Arent they concerned for their safety? Your child is a minor and a minor requires adult supervision. As someone who has completed several certified courses in Early Childhood Development and was in Early Childhood Education for 10 years, this boggles my mind.

Because the underage Roger Rabbit cosplayer at this years San Diego Comic-Con was not properly supervised, her evening ended with a suspicious 29 year old male (its not okay for a man that age to spend time alone with a minor ever) and suffering from a  6 foot fall. Her injuries include eye socket and skull fractures and bleeding from the brain. She also had drugs in her system. Shes lucky she wasnt killed.

Where were her parents?

Everyone needs to learn from this horrible situation. Comic-Cons, shows and events are not a "get out of parenting for the afternoon" card. If your child is a minor, you need to provide them with adult supervision. If you cant do it, find someone else who can. And if your child doesnt like it, thats tough. End of story, No excuse. Failing to do so can have deadly consequences.

Why Charity Work Matters to Me

0 komentar
Charity Work is something that I have been interested in for quite some time. My interest reached a new level after discovering that many people I knew were in the Heroes Alliance. The Heroes Alliance is a nationwide non-profit organization of  volunteers who give back to the community by making super hero appearances at child-related charities and events. I had seen many wonderful photos and spoke to the charity workers about their mission and how they used their skills in costuming to brighten a childs day. They became real life heroes to children (and their families) who desperately needed hope and I wanted to become a part of it.

I wanted to get involved for many reasons. First and foremost, I know what its like for your life to suddenly change. In 1999 I went from able -bodied teenager to being in a wheelchair in a blink of an eye. One moment I was carefree and the next, I was bleeding and broken, trapped in a car. Words cannot describe how shattering it is for your life to suddenly change. You experience shock, depression, anger, exhaustion, hopelessness and a whole other truck load of emotions. And then theres your family and what they are experiencing. It is not easy. The world goes dark and during these times it is so important to let any amount of love and light in. It does make a difference. It can help you heal. I was so happy after months of being in the hospital, when I was finally taken to the art room to do a craft project. That memory stands out. That happy moment. If Superman or Wonder Woman came to visit me, I can tell you right now that would have made all the difference in the world.

When I got the process moving on creating and running a Heroes Alliance branch in Pennsylvania, the unthinkable happened. My grandmother had fallen ill. My beautiful green-eyed grandmother was always there for her family. If someone needed a place to sleep, she offered her couch. If they needed a meal, she cooked for them. She swept the sidewalk of her neighborhood and always loved telling people that God loved them. She was a good, loving woman and sadly in late 2013, I had to gather up the strength to say good-bye to her on her deathbed. That was the hardest thing I have ever done. Emotionally and mentally I was a mess and then my body shut down. I broke out in hives that spread throughout my body and came down with a cold. I was in bed and on medication for days and yet, I did not want to stop the process on creating a Heroes Alliance branch. Although I was terribly sick, I felt my grandmothers strength with me and knew proceeding with this would be the best way to honor her memory.

My grandmother and my accident is why charity work matters to me. I know what its like for your life to change and I know what its like to lose someone you love. My grandmothers kindness and generosity inspired me to help others like she once did.

I cant speak highly enough about the Heroes Alliance organization. It truly is a beautiful concept to give back and an added bonus that we are dressed as super heroes. Everyone has a big heart and they are just as passionate as you are to make the world a better place. We are making a difference and spreading love, support and positivity.  And everyone within the organization supports one another in their mission 110% all throughout the United States. We all have a story on why super hero charity work means so much to us. Now you know mine.

Dedicated to Virginia
I love you

Support needed for the Wonder Woman film Heritage

0 komentar
Photographer Adam Jay has been taking the cosplay world by storm with his stunning images. He is currently the most sought after photographer among cosplayers and after seeing his work, its easy to see why. His photographs look as if they are from the set of Hollywoods latest comic book blockbuster. Now that Adam has conquered the world of photography, his sight is now set on bringing every ones favorite Amazon to life.

My earliest memories of Wonder Woman comes at the age of 7 years old. I would watch reruns of the Lynda Carter show daily and found myself spinning across the living room pretending to transform from Diana Prince to Wonder Woman (and usually ended up crashing into the coffee table). Ive loved her nearly all of my life and am beyond frustrated that DC Comics owns the most iconic female superhero in the world and does nothing with her. Her comics are badly written and no real attempt has been made to make her more marketable or mainstream. Shes the third wheel to Superman and Batman. DC has kept their focus on Bruce and Clark for far too long in terms of live action films, animated movies, and so forth. Although they have tinkered with the idea of giving us a little more of our Amazon Princess (such as her appearance in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and the 2009 direct to DVD animated film) it appears DC is deathly afraid of really putting an effort in Diana and when they did, they failed to protect her.  Case in point is the 2011 Wonder Woman television pilot starring Adrianne Palicki. The episode featured Diana as a foul mouth vigilante who threatened citizens on national television and killed henchmen. As a Wonder Woman fan, I was horrified and thanked the gods that it was not picked up by the networks.

Thankfully our prayers have been answered for a respectable live action Wonder Woman.  Adam Jay has recruited a talented team for his next project, the fan film "Heritage" but he needs your help.

Donations are currently needed to make this project a reality. The film will be directed by Adam and starring Sarah Scott, the stunning model featured in Adams photos. The goal for funds is $10,000 and every little bit helps. Your contribution will not go unnoticed (unless you would prefer it that way) and you will receive a special thank you as seen below:

I recently had the pleasure of working with Adam at the recent Wizard World Philly/Philadelphia Comic Con 2012 show. I can say with greatest confidence that I know Wonder Woman is in safe hands. She will be brought to life in a beautiful and unique way. As a Wonder Woman fan and a fan of Adams superb photography,  its important to support this project. DC Comics feels Diana is too much of a risk and has repeatedly failed to give the fans what they want. The fan film Heritage will breathe life and respect to the champion of the Amazons.

Heroes Alliance Pennsylvania Members Talk Costuming for Charity

0 komentar
It takes a special type of person to suit up on the weekends and dedicate their day off to visiting a childrens charity. Not everyone is willing to do it but the members of the Heroes Alliance are here to answer that call. The Heroes Alliance believes in using our passion and skills in costuming to give back to the community through fundraising and supporting charity and community events. It is a nationwide non-profit costuming organization whose mission is to bring a "real life" superhero experience to sick, disabled and medically fragile children. Some members of the Pennsylvania branch, which was established in November 2013,  took time out to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about why superhero charity work means so much to them.

Philip Parke- Fully activated member. Costumes Hawkeye: "Ive always wanted to give back to the community I live in and sometimes love. I was sick and fighting cancer at one time. I was lucky enough to survive and tell my story. These kids dont always have that chance. So I figured running into burning buildings and pumping on peoples chests wasnt enough. I had to start learning to sew and do silly poses. I love the Heroes Alliance. I love the people we help. We dont ask for money and we all give our best effort to make children feel special even if for a moment. This is why Im here. To make a stand with my sisters and brothers of the Heroes Alliance, and make the world a better place. One smile at a time."

Greg Walraven- Fully activated member. Costumes Captain America and Green Lantern. "I joined Heroes Alliance so I could help make people feel better, happy, maybe smile for a moment. Then I found that we also have the awesome benefit of inspiring children. I learned this at my second event when a little girl came sprinting and nearly tackling Victoria dressed as Wonder Woman. This little girl (4-6) I believe was so happy to see WW, but what struck me the most was how focused she was while Victoria was talking to her. She was not going to miss a word she said. That little girl was clearly inspired. What better way to inspire people than with a group of superheroes?"

Alexandra and Mark Wolsiefer - Fully activated members. Costumes include Scarlet Witch, Star-Lord and Quick Silver. "My husband and I both joined the Heroes Alliance for similar reasons. We both understand what its like to be young and have something unexpected happen. For him it was the loss of a family member and for me it having to deal with chronic illnesses. We both shared a passion for fandom though, and know just how much these Superheroes can help make even the darkest times feel better. So when I saw the opportunity to join the Heroes Alliance and give back to the community, we jumped at it. Seeing the smiles on the faces of children is worth every moment of being hot in a wig. And we are both so honored to be a part of this organization."

Kevin Diplacido- Fully activated member. Costumes Batman and Captain America.  "I’m a veteran at costuming for birthday parties and charity events. Since 1992, when I did my first costuming at a comic con in NYC. Loving costuming, I started working for a party entertainment company as Tommy, The White Power Ranger. Wanting to do more events, I added to the heroes and characters I did, and I started my own party and event entertainment business. Over the years many charities have reached out to me to be at their events, and I have donated my time to them. I have had family and friends who have battled different diseases. Some have lost the battle to these diseases. Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and MS just to name a few. Many of my events are for adult, and children’s charities. The Heroes Alliance has helped me expand on that, and has allowed me to get out there more often to children’s charity events, and make more people smile. HA is dedicated to making children in need happy, and I support that very much. I look forward to our events, and hope there are many more to do, with my friends at The Heroes Alliance."

Kim Cicconi- Fully activated member. Costumes The Invisible Woman and Black Widow. "Ive got a history of unconventional philanthropy to continue, having participated in Penn States Dance Marathon (THON) for three years. When the opportunity arose to join Heroes Alliance and give back to the community again, I signed up in a hot second--and to be honest, I cant tell you why. Deep down, I suspect its because costuming can be a very self-gratifying hobby for me at times, satisfying needs for attention and self-expression and creativity. I have the privilege to turn those needs outward, and give something of my self-expression and creativity to people who deserve my attention. Im massively grateful every time I have the opportunity to attend an event as a Heroes Alliance member, because its a chance to offer kids a smile and a hug and a moment of joy. Even the ones who dont know who Im dressed as. Or dont want to come close. Or just want to talk to Batman. Its all great."

Victoria Lee- Leader/Coordinator for the Pennsylvania branch of the Heroes Alliance and Council Member. Costumes Supergirl and Wonder Woman (has also costumed Black Widow, Shadow Cat and Catwoman).  "I know from personal experience what it is like for your life to change in a blink of an eye. In 1999 I was injured in an auto accident and suffered 17 fractures. I was given 2 blood transfusions and required two emergency surgeries where doctors put two titanium rods in my right arm and one in my right leg. I was told I may never be able to walk again. I spent several months in the hospital and when I was released, I was bound to a wheel chair. It took me 9 months to learn how to walk again. When you experience trauma, you go through stages of shock, anger and depression. In addition to your physical injuries you also suffer emotionally and psychologically. The smallest act of kindest can impact you greatly and helps with the healing process. I am blessed. I got my life back. I am in the position now where I can use costuming/cosplay to give happiness to those who are suffering. They need as much positive energy as possible. They truly need it. I know that from personal experience."
