Interview Sculptor ReevzFX

0 komentar
I am a great admirer of sculptor ReevzFX work. His highly detailed stunning pieces has made him one of the most sought after commissioners in the world of costuming. Reevz took some time to chat with the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about his craft and his thoughts on Hollywoods take on Superhero costumes.

Victoria: How long have you been sculpting?

Reevz: About 7 years. I tried sculpting in high school but was more of a comic book artist. The more time passed, I connected with industry pros online and figured Id try my hand at sculpting masks and Ive been doing it ever since.

Victoria: How long does it take to create a cowl?

Reevz: Depends on the design and the deadline. Normally I block everything out in a a few hours, then I spend about a day or so getting the forms even and work on the symmetry. Then I spend another few days detailing and surface cleaning. The sculpting process goes pretty fast if its something Im doing for myself but most times a client will change the design along the way which adds more time to the final sculpting process. I then seal the sculpt, make the mold and once that is finished I am able to produce the castings. The whole process from sculpt to casting normally takes about 3-4 weeks.

Victoria: Whats the most difficult cowl or accessory youve created?

Reevz:  The new Wolverine cowl was pretty tricky. The mold needed to be done a certain way to keep the castings seamless. Also casting then in 2 colors is pretty laborious.

Victoria: Whats your favorite piece you have made?

Reevz: Probably my ManBat mask. It was one of those commissions that came out better than I had envisioned. I was sad when I had to ship it out to the customer. I wanted to keep it

Hospital Heroes Tour with Dustin Dorough

0 komentar
When news via Facebook spread that a national hospital tour was in the works featuring The Man of Steel visiting childrens hospitals around the country, it certainly sparked my curiosity. Hospital visitations by comic book characters is a charitable act that I have always admired and I was impressed that someone was driven to expand on the idea. Dustin Dorough is the man behind the Hospital Heroes Tour and will be spreading hope and strength throughout the U.S. as Superman.

Victoria: When does your hospital tour begin and when is the end date?

Dustin: The tour begins on September 3rd of this year. Just less than a month away. The end date is likely sometime in December, but Im still not sure yet. It just depends on when the various hospitals are available for my visits as well as my obligations for my regular job.

Victoria: Cosplayers visiting hospitals is something people have been doing for years, particularly members of the Hero Alliance. You decided to take it a step further and make this a national tour. Why so?

Dustin: I actually have a lot of friends in the Hero Alliance as well as in the Costumers with a Cause group. They inspired me to start visiting hospitals as Superman. I had always wanted to do such things in the past, but I only had a bone-claw Wolverine costume. I didnt think that a blood-soaked wild man would be that comforting to the kids, haha. After I switched over to Superman costuming, I began researching my options in hospital visitation. Many hospitals require you to be part of an established group in order to visit in costume, so that was my first obstacle. I have a friend that works in a hospital in New Hampshire who invited me to come visit in costume when I was working in her area this August. I was thrilled! Though, sadly, my work in that area was cancelled so I wasnt able to visit the kids either. That REALLY bummed me out. I was desperately looking for a way to get up to NH to visit the hospital anyway. I was pricing bus tickets, plane tickets, fuel costs to drive there, etc. and I suddenly thought, "Why spend all of this money to visit one hospital, when I can visit ALL OF THEM?" and the project began from there. It was originally just the east coast of the US. Then it grew to the eastern half and eventually grew to be the entire country as well as part of Canada. The support and demand from the public at large was just phenomenal and I didnt have the heart to say no.

Victoria: Why is it important to you to visit hospitalized children?

Dustin: I just know that superheroes helped me cope with a lot of hard times in my life. I was always fascinated by the hero persona, whether it be comic book, adventure tale or action movie. I just want to be able to help inspire these kids in the same way that my heroes inspired me. I feel like the most important job of any hero isnt necessarily saving each person directly, but more-so in inspiring them to save themselves.
At the same time, I often see people with good intentions who dont act on them because they are ashamed of their good nature. We live in a world where one can gain bragging rights from how many moral sacrifices theyve made in order to reach their goals. I prefer to believe that its much more impressive to see just how far you can go with your integrity in-tact. This international journey is about more than just children with illnesses. Im making such a large spectacle of it so that any onlookers who witness these acts might be inspired to act upon their own good natures. I want to prove that old-fashioned decency still has a place in the modern world and I want to show that its okay to be a good person.

Victoria: How are you hoping to impact their lives?

Dustin: I want to give them the greatest gift of all: Hope. You never hear stories about overly-pessimistic and downtrodden individuals having miraculous recoveries after an illness. Its always the ones who refuse to give up who actually get the results that they want. I want to remind these kids of the strength that they have within them and to make them feel just as heroic as any of the members of the Justice League. Thats why Im going to be passing out "Certificates of Heroism" in recognition of their bravery in fighting their illness and for the inspiration theyve provided to others by being so strong.

Victoria: Why did you select Superman as your character?

Dustin: Superman is the ultimate inspiration for me. Hes a man who can destroy the earth, but chooses to serve it. He lost his planet, but protects ours. He has every single reason imaginable to be angry, bitter and upset, but he is a constant shining symbol of hope and inspiration. Hes also very iconic and recognizable to the younger kids. Superman is also much less likely to frighten children than other characters such as Batman.

Victoria: Are you a cosplayer?

Dustin: Yup! Ive been active in the convention community since 2007 when I first came to Dragon*Con. I used to make and sell custom costume props online, but I had to let go of that business because of other opportunities. Since beginning, Ive had costumes of a Spartan, Power Ranger, Mad Max, Rambo, Green Lantern, Wolverine, Superman and Sterling Archer. I currently have two more Superman costumes on the way to use on this tour. Though, I will be obtaining the Man of Steel costume from next years movie very soon afterward. After this tour, I will likely cosplay as Captain Marvel, Nightwing and Batman to put some variety back into my spandex lifestyle, haha.

Victoria: Youre currently raising money to help with your cause. Can you tell my readers how they can donate?

Dustin: Donations can be made through the fundraising page at www.indiegogo.com/hospitalheroes

Victoria: What is your current occupation?

Dustin: That is one of the most difficult questions to answer, haha. I generally just classify myself as a professional adventurer. I havent been in one city for longer than seven days since last year. I travel working as the emcee for the Spartan Race series (http://www.spartanrace.com/), posing with tourists on Bourbon Street in my Superman uniform, building custom racing boats in Florida (Im part of the CAL500 race team for a 2,400 mile powerboat race from Cowes, England to Monaco next June.) and I work on various TV shows and movies that film around the southeastern United States. I was once a recurring bailiff on "Drop Dead Diva", a werewolf on "Vampire Diaries", zombie on "The Walking Dead" (I was originally hired to be Shanes body double, but I was too big, so they made me a zombie instead), a Federal Security Agent in "G.I.Joe II" and I did a lot of work as a stand-in for Billy Crudup and Will Forte in the new movie, "The Watch". I just kind of follow the adventure and let life lead me wherever I should go.

Victoria: Will you be attending any conventions this year?

Dustin: Wizard World Chicago. After that, Ill be at Dragon*Con in Atlanta and then New York Comic Con in October. There might be others, but it all depends on my tour schedule. I love going to as many conventions as possible, but time and money usually get in the way.

Victoria: If this tour is successful, would you consider doing it again in the future?

Dustin: That honestly depends on how I personally react to the experience. I have no doubts that the tour will be successful, because I refuse to let it fail. I feel like this trip needs to happen at least once. Though, I do know that Im going to be seeing thousands of children in pain. There will be terminal cancer patients, burn victims, abused children, etc. and that kind of thing is likely to take an emotional toll. Ive scheduled "off" days along the way to keep those feelings from building up too much, but there will still be the chance of it becoming overwhelming. Such experiences could honestly go one of two ways with me: They could depress me to the point of never wanting to do this again OR they could depress me to the point of understanding just how important my job as Superman really is, and will leave me with no choice but to do it again. (Knowing me, it will probably be the latter.) Though, I cant say anything for certain because I never know what opportunities or adventures might lie just around the corner. Who knows? Maybe Ill do a European tour next.

Heroes Alliance Pennsylvania Members Talk Costuming for Charity

0 komentar
It takes a special type of person to suit up on the weekends and dedicate their day off to visiting a childrens charity. Not everyone is willing to do it but the members of the Heroes Alliance are here to answer that call. The Heroes Alliance believes in using our passion and skills in costuming to give back to the community through fundraising and supporting charity and community events. It is a nationwide non-profit costuming organization whose mission is to bring a "real life" superhero experience to sick, disabled and medically fragile children. Some members of the Pennsylvania branch, which was established in November 2013,  took time out to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about why superhero charity work means so much to them.

Philip Parke- Fully activated member. Costumes Hawkeye: "Ive always wanted to give back to the community I live in and sometimes love. I was sick and fighting cancer at one time. I was lucky enough to survive and tell my story. These kids dont always have that chance. So I figured running into burning buildings and pumping on peoples chests wasnt enough. I had to start learning to sew and do silly poses. I love the Heroes Alliance. I love the people we help. We dont ask for money and we all give our best effort to make children feel special even if for a moment. This is why Im here. To make a stand with my sisters and brothers of the Heroes Alliance, and make the world a better place. One smile at a time."

Greg Walraven- Fully activated member. Costumes Captain America and Green Lantern. "I joined Heroes Alliance so I could help make people feel better, happy, maybe smile for a moment. Then I found that we also have the awesome benefit of inspiring children. I learned this at my second event when a little girl came sprinting and nearly tackling Victoria dressed as Wonder Woman. This little girl (4-6) I believe was so happy to see WW, but what struck me the most was how focused she was while Victoria was talking to her. She was not going to miss a word she said. That little girl was clearly inspired. What better way to inspire people than with a group of superheroes?"

Alexandra and Mark Wolsiefer - Fully activated members. Costumes include Scarlet Witch, Star-Lord and Quick Silver. "My husband and I both joined the Heroes Alliance for similar reasons. We both understand what its like to be young and have something unexpected happen. For him it was the loss of a family member and for me it having to deal with chronic illnesses. We both shared a passion for fandom though, and know just how much these Superheroes can help make even the darkest times feel better. So when I saw the opportunity to join the Heroes Alliance and give back to the community, we jumped at it. Seeing the smiles on the faces of children is worth every moment of being hot in a wig. And we are both so honored to be a part of this organization."

Kevin Diplacido- Fully activated member. Costumes Batman and Captain America.  "I’m a veteran at costuming for birthday parties and charity events. Since 1992, when I did my first costuming at a comic con in NYC. Loving costuming, I started working for a party entertainment company as Tommy, The White Power Ranger. Wanting to do more events, I added to the heroes and characters I did, and I started my own party and event entertainment business. Over the years many charities have reached out to me to be at their events, and I have donated my time to them. I have had family and friends who have battled different diseases. Some have lost the battle to these diseases. Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and MS just to name a few. Many of my events are for adult, and children’s charities. The Heroes Alliance has helped me expand on that, and has allowed me to get out there more often to children’s charity events, and make more people smile. HA is dedicated to making children in need happy, and I support that very much. I look forward to our events, and hope there are many more to do, with my friends at The Heroes Alliance."

Kim Cicconi- Fully activated member. Costumes The Invisible Woman and Black Widow. "Ive got a history of unconventional philanthropy to continue, having participated in Penn States Dance Marathon (THON) for three years. When the opportunity arose to join Heroes Alliance and give back to the community again, I signed up in a hot second--and to be honest, I cant tell you why. Deep down, I suspect its because costuming can be a very self-gratifying hobby for me at times, satisfying needs for attention and self-expression and creativity. I have the privilege to turn those needs outward, and give something of my self-expression and creativity to people who deserve my attention. Im massively grateful every time I have the opportunity to attend an event as a Heroes Alliance member, because its a chance to offer kids a smile and a hug and a moment of joy. Even the ones who dont know who Im dressed as. Or dont want to come close. Or just want to talk to Batman. Its all great."

Victoria Lee- Leader/Coordinator for the Pennsylvania branch of the Heroes Alliance and Council Member. Costumes Supergirl and Wonder Woman (has also costumed Black Widow, Shadow Cat and Catwoman).  "I know from personal experience what it is like for your life to change in a blink of an eye. In 1999 I was injured in an auto accident and suffered 17 fractures. I was given 2 blood transfusions and required two emergency surgeries where doctors put two titanium rods in my right arm and one in my right leg. I was told I may never be able to walk again. I spent several months in the hospital and when I was released, I was bound to a wheel chair. It took me 9 months to learn how to walk again. When you experience trauma, you go through stages of shock, anger and depression. In addition to your physical injuries you also suffer emotionally and psychologically. The smallest act of kindest can impact you greatly and helps with the healing process. I am blessed. I got my life back. I am in the position now where I can use costuming/cosplay to give happiness to those who are suffering. They need as much positive energy as possible. They truly need it. I know that from personal experience."
