Should healthcare workers stop shaking hands and fist bump instead

0 komentar
Some well-intentioned researchers from West Virginia University published a small study claiming that substituting a fist bump for a handshake might reduce the transmission of bacteria.

Since many illnesses can be transmitted by contaminated hands, the idea is plausible, but its a good example of the media misinterpreting a study and misleading naïve readers..

They measured the surface area of open hands and fists in 10 subjects. Not surprisingly surface area of an open hand was significantly greater than that of the fist—30.206 vs. 7.867 sq. in. respectively, p < 0.00001.

They also measured the contact time of handshakes and fist bumps. The handshake took 2.7 times longer than that of the fist bump (0.75 vs 0.28 seconds). [No statistical analysis provided]

Then two (yes, just two) healthcare workers walked around the hospital touching various objects and shook the hands of 20 coworkers. The palm of one hand was then cultured by putting it in a plate of agar for 5 seconds. The experiment was repeated with a fist bump substituting for the handshake. Then the closed fist was cultured in the same way..

The result was that "Total colonization of the palmar surface of the hand was four times greater than that of the fist after incubation for 72 h (187.5 vs 42.5 colony forming units)." [Again, no statistical analysis provided and not surprising since the palmar area was four times the area of the fist]

Photos of both the palm culture and the fist culture were shown. The bacteria grew in patterns resembling an outstretched hand and a fist.

Regarding the amount of bacteria, way down near the end of the discussion section of the brief paper is this "The study is limited by our small sample size and it could not assess statistical significance."

So we have a study of a whopping two subjects that shows no significant difference for bacterial growth or contact time of the handshake vs. the fist. Also, I wonder how many times a day hospital workers shake hands with each other? In my experience, my guess would be zero.

Did these facts deter the media? Not one bit. Take a look at these unrestrained headlines.

LA Times "Handshakes are germ bombs - embrace the fist bump!"
The Atlantic "The Fist Bump Manifesto"
MedCity News "Want to spread fewer germs in hospitals? Ditch the handshake, go for a fist bump"
CBC News "Doctors encourage fist bump over handshake to prevent illness"
National Geographic "Why Germs Prefer Handshakes to Fist Bumps"
FierceHealthcare "Want to cut HAIs [Hospital Acquired Infections]? Try a fist bump"

This is just one of many examples of the media sensationalizing the findings of a paper far beyond what it is due. The idea is interesting and might be worth studying further with a few more subjects and then trying to prove that more infections were actually transmitted by the handshake than the fist.

A more recent study showed that fist bumps transmit fewer bacteria than handshakes or high fives.

Other than confusing many patients, it would cause no harm to offer them a fist as long as the reason was stated. However, taking this to its logical conclusion, maybe even a fist bump, which involves contact and potential bacterial transmission, is not the answer.

Here are some alternatives:

Prayer hands
Genuflection
Upraised palm
Bow/curtsey
Salute
Right hand to heart (your own heart)
Rubbing noses (even smaller surface area)
Or better still, this:

Interview Photographer Dru Phillips AMPCosplay

Photo by Your Mojo by Jojo
Fashion photographer Dru Phillips of AMP Cosplay has brought his unique and creative eye to the world of costuming. Based in Georgia, the man of many talents has a gorgeous portfolio full of stunning images of characters that rival those seen in Hollywood. He has evolved from photographer to cosplayer and is a member of the Heroes Alliance charity organization. Dru took some time to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about his art as a photographer, charity work, the first character he choose to cosplay and much more.

Victoria: How long have you been a professional photographer?

Dru: I have been shooting pro for about 6 years, 7 if you want to count 2015. lol

Victoria: What made you set your sights on cosplayers?

Dru: Well, the reason I started shooting cosplay is because I went to DragonCon by accident one year and when I saw the quality of some of the costumes, I wanted to capture it but outside of the con atmosphere. I wanted to treat cosplay the same way I treated my fashion work. The only difference is hair, make up, wardrobe, and model are usually the same person so it makes life super easy.

Victoria: Who was the very first cosplayer you photographed?

Dru: I have photographed on the serious note Margie Cox first. We did her Elektra. And as you can see from my body of work, she has kind of become my muse.

Victoria: You have a very unique style. What is your approach and goal when you are photographing people in costumes?

Dru: I am looking at the costume and how it sits on the model the same way I look at dresses and suits when I do fashion. I am interested it showing the quality of work that costumers put into their product.

Victoria: Have you attended any conventions?

Dru: I have attened DragonCon, MegaCon, attended and worked MomoCon, and I have been to a few small ones that I cant remember the names.

Victoria: In addition to photographing cosplayers, you are also a photographer for the Georgia branch of the Heroes Alliance. Whats it like capturing moments between costumers and childrens charities?

Dru: Oh man, photographing for HA is the reason I personally started cosplaying myself. You can not beat the reaction you get from a kid who sees Wonder Woman. Not a woman in a costume but actual Wonder Woman or Superman or whom ever. Its a feeling that hits the soul and brings out a very human happiness. A childs genuine smile can change your whole outlook on life.

Victoria: You have also joined the Heroes Alliance as a costumer. Who made your fantastic Green Lantern costume? Why did you pick that character?

Dru: My costume was made by Margie Cox and I picked that character because he represents a lot. As a black male there arent too many heroes in the comic world to look up to and the Green Lantern on a whole but particularly John Stewart represents a thing that I feel a black male needs to survive and thats Will Power. There are so many things out there and young black kids need to see something other than the typical rapper or basketball player, or killings on the news by what they feel are also heroes. Hope I didnt get to political.

Victoria: Not at all. Thank you for sharing your views. What was your first experience at a charity event as Green Lantern like? What was your experience with the children?

Dru:  Oh man my first event was okay. It was Super Hero Day at the Fernbank Museum and I left part of my costume. But I was told by the other heroes that it has to happen at least once lol. But the event that was memorable is when I did the Buddy Walk. Thats were kids lit up and mouths dropped open and even adults were captivated. I rarely pick up a camera now for events.

Victoria:  Where can people contact you and view a portfolio of your work?

Dru: Well, I am all over the web www.AndrewMichaelPhillips.com, www.AMPCosplay.Tumblr.com, moshunman.deviantart.com, and www.facebook.com/officalAMPCosplay and I am in a traveling gallery Exhibition. But any of those sites would be fine. Best if people follow me on the Tumblr and Facebook though.

What Cosplayers Need to Stop Doing

Not too long ago a video was circulating on the web where the host discussed a list he created on what cosplayers need to "stop doing". Reasons varied between creating Kickstarter Campaigns to sexy costumes. While the intentions were meant to be noble and he is certainly entitled to his opinion, there were topics he discussed that left me shaking my head. By the end of the video I had a moment of clarity. Its clear what cosplayers (and the public that follows us) needs to stop doing in terms of racism, Kickstarters, gender bender, sexy costumes and so on.

People need to stop judging each other. Thats it.

See how simple that was? Namaste.

House of Reps members take over Kogi Assembly

0 komentar
Following the one month crisis that has rocked the Kogi state House of Assembly, members of the House of Reps today March 8th, resolved to take over the function of the state assembly. The Kogi state House of Assembly was thrown into crises after five members impeached the speaker Momoh Jimoh Lawal and elected Umar Imam as new speaker last month.

A panel set up by the House of Representatives to resolve the issue was shunned by the Assembly members. In taking the decision at plenary, the House of Rep members said its action was in line with the provision of Section 11 (4) of the 1999 Constitution, which says the National Assembly could take over the functions of any state assembly that is enmeshed in crisis.

They urged the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase to immediately seal off the Kogi Assembly since the House has taken over its functions.

Court dismisses Metuhs suit trying to stop his trial

0 komentar
The Fundamental Rights Enforcement suit filed against the EFCC by the National spokesperson of PDP, Olisa Metuh, has been dismissed by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The judge dismissed the suit at its hearing this morning March 9th. Metuh had filed the suit challenging his arrest and detention by EFCC over his alleged involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal.

Metuh asked the court to make a declaration that his arrest on January 5th was unlawful as there was no warrant of arrest issued by any court. Metuh also argued that his detention by EFCC for 10 days without being charged to court violated his rights. He asked the court to stop EFCC from further arresting him.

Dismissing Metuhs suit, the presiding judge, Justice Abang held that EFCC had the constitutional powers to arrest and detain him. Justice Abang stressed that his arrest was lawful as it was granted by a Chief Magistrate court. He thereafter dismissed the suit for lacking in merit and awarded a cost of N15, 000 against Metuh.

Can Google Glass make you a better surgeon

0 komentar
Advocates of Google Glass in surgery are apparently desperate to find some use for the device.

An article headlined "Google Glass makes doctors better surgeons, Stanford study shows" concluded that the study offered "compelling preliminary evidence that the head-mounted display can be used in a clinical setting to enhance situational awareness and patient safety."

Using an app capable of displaying vital signs on Google Glass in real time, 7 surgical residents recognized critical desaturation in simulated patients having procedures under conscious sedation 8.8 seconds faster than a control group of 7 residents relying on standard monitors. Glass-wearing residents also became aware of hypotension 10.5 seconds before the control group.

Not mentioned in the article but present in a linked abstract of the paper not yet submitted for peer review was this pearlneither difference was statistically significant.

This evidence is not that convincing. Even if the difference had been statistically significant, it is surely not clinically important.

How seeing vital signs on Google Glass is better than relying on the simple alarms that are built in to every monitor is not clear. Either way, you must stop the operation and look up to see the vital signs.

In a brief video accompanying the article, a surgeon can be seen rather clumsily activating and resetting the app on his Google Glass. The time required to perform these maneuvers apparently was not discussed.

The article, probably written directly from a press release, took a comedic turn with this sentence, "One test demanded that the resident perform a bronchoscopy, in which the surgeon makes an incision in the patient’s throat to access a blocked airway." But bronchoscopy does not involve making an incision in the throat or anywhere else.

If you would like to hear a different side of the Google Glass story, check out this video review from GeekBeatTV entitled "Google Glass is the worst product of all time." You can forward to the 3:45 mark to get past the woes of wearing prescription glasses with Google Glass and hear about the poor battery life, the balky commands, the system crashes, and more.
