An Open Letter to the Wizard World Philadelphia Organization

0 komentar
There was a lot of controversy surrounding the 2013 Wizard World Philadelphia Comic-Con and for good reason. Complaints were made regarding the ticket prices, guest list and lack of comic talent, among other things. Before you brush this off as just an angry geek girl rant, Id like to point out that I have been attending the Wizard World Philadelphia show for the past 10 years. It was my very first convention and takes place in my home town. I attended it long before I was a cosplayer, Blogger or a professional model. I have many fond memories but in the last 5 years, the show has been decreasing in quality. I am speaking my mind and writing this open letter to the organization based on my 10 year experience and observation. I am expressing my opinion as a fan (a title that is probably best described as "former fan" these days). I certainly am not one of those cosplayers who think I know how to run a multi-million dollar organization simply because I cosplay. There is no ego here. Just an opinion based on my experience at this show and attending other shows such as the San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic-Con, Dragoncon, The Baltimore Comic-Con and Megacon. Below are 6 major problems with the show.

Problem #1: Over Priced Tickets

The Baltimore Comic-Con 2 day weekend pass is on sale for $40.00 on their website. New York Comic-Con is charging $65 for a 3 day pass ($85 for a 4 day). The Megacon Convention is charging $60.00 for a 3 day online pass. A one day Wizard World Philadelphia was a whopping $50, $85-$95 for a three and a half day pass. The ticket price is absurd.

Problem #2: Lack of Comic Talent

While other shows feature such guests as George Perez, Gail Simone, J. Scott Campbell, Adam Hughes and many others, Wizard would rather focus on booking actors who charge for photos and autographs. Im not saying that actors should not be permitted. I like seeing Hollywood celebrities and if you have the extra cash to "meet" them, go for it. But it appears that Wizard has lost its roots. Its not about comics anymore. Its about Hollywood. At this years show, Stan Lee was the big comic draw and.....thats it.

Problem #3: Missing Publishers

It appears that even the publishing gods have abandoned Wizard. Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Top Cow, Aspen and other major publishers stopped attending the show roughly 5 years ago.

Problem #4: Zero Exclusives

There was a time where you could purchase exclusive statues, comics and toys at the Philadelphia Show. Hunting and buying exclusives makes any show more enjoyable. Now the vendors consist of items easily purchased at Toys R Us and Target for double price.

Problem #5: Denying the Press Access

This year Wizard denied press passes to Bloggers and photographers. Photographers were only allowed in if they were union. I know of 3 Bloggers, myself included, who had a good business relationship with Wizard and covered the event for several years thus giving the organization press and exposure. This year our press passes were denied. I would not have minded purchasing a full pass; if it didnt cost nearly $100 each. As a result, my photographer and I only attended Friday.

Problem #6: The Guest List Flub

Im not sure who was in charge of the online guest list but I was completely shocked to discover that two of the biggest names in cosplay were attending the show and not listed on the site. Spencer Doe and Nicole Marie have both gone viral with their Batman and Lady Bane costumes. They had a table at the show where they met fans, posed for photos and sold prints. I would not have known they were at the show if it wasnt for Facebook. How someone missed posting that two of the biggest names in cosplay, who are easily headliners,  is mind boggling.

I have to report that it was nice to see that gift bags had returned. Among other things it featured a free issue of the Walking Dead comic. The seating area had also been expanded and Artist Alley featured a large variety of local talent. Although these are steps in the right direction, it is too little, too late. There are still many things wrong with the show as seen in my list and these problems have been ongoing for the past 5 years. I have traveled and attended many shows around the country and Wizard is easily the most poorly organized national show. Unless some major changes are made for 2014, you can consider this show to be our last.

Cosplay Spotlight Knightess Rouge

0 komentar
I first discovered Nataschas cosplay work while scrolling on my Newsfeed on Facebook. It was one of those moments when you literally stop. The German beauty literally looks like a comic book character come to life. With her high quality costumes and stunning photography, Natascha aka Knightess Rouge, has developed a huge following including Batgirl writer, Gail Simone. Natascha took some time to chat with the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about her craft, the sudden firing (and re-hiring) of Gail Simone and what fasinates her about Barbara Gordon.

Victoria: How long have you been in the hobby of costuming?

Natascha: Im involved in making costumes for about six or seven years, but started doing superhero costumes and bigger projects only one year ago. The past year made me develop so many new skills and also a bigger interest in costume making. Its been a great joy.

Victoria: Where are you from?

Natascha: Im from Germany. Living in a small city close to Cologne and Düsseldorf.

Victoria: Do you have any costumes currently in the works?

Natascha: Yes, indeed. I actually always work on a few costumes at the same time. Right now Im working on a Stephanie Brown Batgirl costume, Firestar, Daenerys Targaryen, Princess Leia, Dove of Hawk and Dove and Mara Jade. Quite a lot! Most of them are close to the finish and some need a little more work. I like to work on many different things to inspire me and keep me working.

Victoria: Tell me about the process of creating your Batgirl costume.

Natascha: It was quite a long process. I started planning and organizing the costume about three months before I started working on it. As soon as my ReevzFX cowl arrived (which is btw. AMAZING. I love his work!), I started working on the bat-suit. It took me three tries with different materials until I got the result I wanted. Fortunately I managed to make the cape without any problems. Its made from pleather and yellow lining and has a little zipper in the back. My belt is made from pleather and the little "capsules" are made from an aluminium pipe and bolt nuts. That was quite a lot of work! It took me a while to find ideas for the belt. I really wanted to make it on my own and Im proud of the result. I always wanted to make a Batgirl costume since I was little, so it was a big dream to come true. I wouldve never gotten that far if I didnt have some amazing people around me who gave me tips and helped when I needed help. A big thank you at this point to Janet Drake, Laban & Jaz Boldero, Bob Kieffer and Shawn Reeves.

Victoria: If you could pick one actress to play Batgirl, who would it be?

Natascha: Thats a tricky question! Personally Id love to see Karen Gillian to play the role of Barbara Gordon. I think shed totally be able to pull off her character and her skills. (Not to mention the look!)

Victoria: Great choice! Do you think Barbara was a stronger, more appealing character when she was working as the wheel chair bound, Oracle?

Natascha: I know theres a lot of controversy about this topic, but personally I find her appealing no matter if shes Batgirl or Oracle. I agree that Oracle had a very important meaning and was a very different character. She gave hope & motivation to many people, but so did Batgirl. Oracle was older and more experienced. Its difficult to compare a teen/young woman to an adult, dont you agree? Barbara Gordon as Batgirl was the very first character I idolized and shell always have a special place in my heart. I also loved her as Oracle, no doubt, and I think she was extremely important for the comic world, but we have to realize that its only the beginning of Barbara Gordons story right now in the New 52. Theres so much more to come and Im sure shell grow to an even bigger hero. She always managed to fascinate people and so itll continue. I refuse to only see her as "Batgirl" or "Oracle". I see her as Barbara Gordon in all her variety and how much she means to people. The things that happened in the past are not lost. You can re-read her stories all the time and theyll never disappear. Keep them close to your heart and remember what you loved about her. I always try to be open to her new adventures. Theyve never disappointed me.

Victoria: What is it about Barbara Gordon that appeals to you?

Natascha: Her stubborness, her strength, her will not to give up. To stand up for the things she believed in and to help people. Theres so much about her that I love. Theres that normal girl, that decides to fight for justice and help people on her own. What could be more inspiring? She didnt need lots of money or a super dramatic story. What she did was fighting to make the world a better place without a dramatic background story. Just because she felt like its the right thing to do.
Even after her biggest setdown she didnt just give up. She decided to pull herself together and help the world in a different way. The character Barbara Gordon teaches us so many things. I think there cant be a better role model for kids and young adults. Im always close to tear up when I get to talk about her. Shes so important for me.

Victoria: What are your thoughts when Gail Simone was suddenly fired from writing Batgirl (and later rehired by DC due to fan outrage)?

Natascha: That was a SHOCK. I couldnt imagine someone else writing Barbara Gordon nowadays. We all know how much she loves Barbara Gordon and that shed never do something bad to her character or disappoint us. The message of her being fired from writing Batgirl made me feel miserable. Who would be able to show us the Barbara Gordon we love, if not Gail Simone? Im extremely glad shes back now and keeps on writing Batgirl. Were really lucky to have someone, who really loves the character, writing Batgirl. Someone whod never disappoint us, because she loves her as much as we do.

Victoria: Is it true that Gail Simone tweeted you?

Natascha: Yes, a few times. I always get so exciting when she does!! THE Batgirl writer calling you "the real Batgirl" is about the best feeling ever. I remember almost tearing up when she first followed me and tweeted me. Unforgetable. Sometimes I cant believe all these wonderful memories are real.

Victoria: Where can people go to learn more about you? Do you have a website or Facebook?

Natascha: Yes, I do! I have a little Facebook page for my costuming work. ( https://www.facebook.com/KnightessRouge )

You can also find me on twitter ( https://twitter.com/knightessrouge ), which I use more regularly and tumblr ( http://knightess-rouge.tumblr.com/ ) or deviantart ( http://knightess-rouge.deviantart.com/ ).

Thank you so much for the wonderful questions! I really enjoyed answering them!

Cosplay Spotlight Freddie Nova

0 komentar
Last year a collection of Venom photos, which used the concept of liquid latex, made a splash across the internet and became a viral sensation. It literally made cosplayer Freddie Nova a household name in the world of geeks and catapulted her into one of the leading ladies in cosplay. Freddie has an extensive and impressive portfolio that has brought her world wide recognition and admiration. Although she has accomplished a great deal, she remains humble, kind and continues to practice her talents and craft. Freddie took some time for an interview with the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about the backlash and censorship of the Venom photos, constructing costumes and her plans for 2013.

Victoria:  How long have you been cosplaying?

Freddie: At Conventions, just shy of half a decade, been dressing up as characters since about 14 years old (17 years ago)

Victoria: What conventions will you be attending in 2013?

Freddie: Toughest question Ive been asked yet! Last year I had a well planned out list by this time with the 11 I attending in 2012 but Con planners really clustered & overlapped dates this year making scheduling very challenging. My only definite ones as of now are C2E2, Phoenix Con, Wizard Chicago & Steel City Con. Possibly Rose City (Portland), Baltimore or Pitt Con & Detroit Fanfare.

Victoria: What was your very first costume?

Freddie: Lady Death

Victoria: Some of your stunning costumes such as Female Skeletor and Lady Death require body paint. How long does the process take?

Freddie: Up to 2 1/2 hours. For someone not covered in tattoos I imagine could take a little less time.

Victoria:  Will you be debuting any new costumes for 2013?

Freddie:  I always do a handful of new & then revamp a few old to save closet space :)  Songbird from Thunderbolts, Femme Spawn, Mrs Freeze, Formal Venom Dress, Cassandra Cain Batgirl, Shi & a surprise MOTU are all under construction so far. And Femme Robocop will be debuted Sat at C2E2 at Superhero Photography by Adam Jay booth, constructed mostly by Hermes Terciero from Brazil then finished by Alex Petrowski (formerly of Monster Makers) & myself.

Victoria:  Your infamous Venom photos were visually stunning and ground breaking.Unfortunately it received some backlash and the images were reported and removed on Facebook. The experience must have been frustrating. How did you cope with someone trying to sabotage your art?

Freddie: At first I was like "what a DOUCHE!" & then we all laughed when it backfired in their face & all the 1,000s of fans posted it over & over going MEGA viral. Its enlightening to see what people will defend when you abuse rights & art :)

Victoria:  What advice would you give to other artists who find themselves being censored?

Freddie: Where the censorship proudly & know it just means you are doing it right. Art is meant to evoke emotion & thats a pretty loud one :) For those not aware as far as FB is concerned, that issue has finally been resolved, an actual human now checks the images for legality first & emails a report back on their decision. So no longer will photos just be removed unrightfully by haters.

Victoria:  Can you take me through the procress of making your Witchblade costume? How long did it take to construct?

Freddie: My Witchblade was at a major stand still for months so not so sure on time total. But it started with collecting pics of her and staring at shapes then trying to mimic shapes onto a 6 sheet of craft foam & then LOTS of cutting out for a surplus of shapes. I then took a silver lycra monokini & long sleeve shirt & cut desired form & stitched together for a base to glue on & had at it overlapping the foam shapes. I then primed, coated in rubber latex & painted & then used a generous amount of toupee tape to adhere to my skin.

Victoria:  Is there a dream costume on your list that you have yet to create?

Freddie: VOLTRON! :D Also I would love to do one of the elaborate Cry for Dawn costumes one day but my limited sewing abilities have been holding me back.

Freddie does not believe in having a "Fan Page", but welcomes anyone to subscribe to her personal FB page: www.facebook.com/freddienova where costume progress pics & good ole fashion Nerd humor are posted daily. (Just please hit Subscribe not Friend Request as it congests the page feed, Thank you)
