Should you wear a hazmat suit when you operate an elevator

In their quest to culture every object on planet Earth, researchers have found that hospital elevator buttons are more contaminated with bacteria than restroom surfaces.

Of 120 randomly cultured elevator buttons, 73 (61%) grew bacteria. Washroom surfaces were cultured 96 times with 41 (43%) showing microbial growth.

As is customary with papers like this, the media sensationalized the findings with headlines like "Why you should never ever touch that hospital elevator button."

Most stories eventually mentioned the fact that the authors said the majority of bacteria found ”had low pathogenicity," but some, including Vox.com, mrsaidblog.com, newsok.com, and mynews13.com, did not. In fact, the MRSAID blog also confused the benign streptococcus found in this paper with the pathogen that causes strep throat.

Ive written several posts about the culturing of various inanimate objects and pointed out that disease transmission has not been documented for almost all surfaces on which bacteria are found. If you click on the "Infection" label to your right, you can read as many as you wish.

It was published in an open-access journal called "Open Medicine." It is not among the top 40 internal medicine journals listed by impact factor. It has no discernible impact factor at all and is not listed PubMed.

The title of the paper "Elevator buttons as unrecognized sources of bacterial colonization in hospitals" overstates the case a bit.

This table shows the types of bacteria found on both the elevator buttons and surfaces in the restrooms.

You can see that pathogens were few. Multiple organisms were found in several instances accounting for some of the numerical discrepancies. I could not figure out how the percentages were calculated. In neither column did the percentages add up to 100%.

Samples of restrooms surfaces were taken "a few months" after the elevator buttons were cultured. The authors conceded that this may have confounded the results.

Washroom sample swabs were taken from the exterior and interior entry-door handles, the privacy latch, and the toilet flusher. They did not swab toilet seats, which previous studies have shown are the gold standard to which all inanimate surfaces should be compared.

It may surprise you to learn that most of the bacteria found on elevator buttons and restroom surfaces can also normally be found ON YOUR HANDS!

Google v Squidoo and Hubpages

Matt Cutts, Google guru, has declared war on content farms.  It is a long war, involving a lot of algorithm tweaking.

The idea being to reduce the power of the content farm when compared to genuine content written for the purpose of it being there, rather than a quick buck.

The graph below shows the last few months of Hubpages v Squidoo traffic as measured by Quantcast.  HubPages is the one at the bottom.

There is a clear decline in HP traffic, and a corresponding rise in Squidoo.  It is as if turning down the dial on HubPages simply increased the views to Squidoo.  Im not a fan of Squidoo but that cant be what Google wanted.

The two sites are very similar.  Content written for marketing - either adsense or affiliate.  To me, Squidoo looks spammier but its a choice thing.

You can see the divergence in traffic around July, gathering pace in late September where HubPages took quite a knock.  As HP goes down then Squidoo rises.  All that traffic had to go somewhere, but it doesnt look like it went to individual sites.

Google just took it from HP and gave it to Squidoo.

I wonder if the Squidoo drop at the beginning of November is the next phase of Googles anti-content farm efforts?  No corresponding rise for HP, so a content farm drop overall.

This has long been promised by Google, the end of the writing sites that specialise in low quality generic material that serves little purpose.  The sites that I have spent my time writing on as it happens.

I havent bothered feeding my blog into Quantcast by the way, it wouldnt even register I should think.

Really, I should stop looking at traffic and just get on with writing.  The trouble is, it is so addictive.

Wouldnt it be nice if Google just set the dial higher on our own content and gave us millions of hits each day?  That really would be worth blogging about.

Can You Make Money at HubPages

Yes, you can make money from HubPages.

But first...

The internet is full of get rich quick claims from scam companies.

Worse that that, there are many bloggers and even reputable news outlets which tell you how good site X is.

They do this for the income from sign-up referrals.

There will be NO sign-up links on this page.  If you want to check out HubPages go and do it.

Google it and have a look.  I will give you my honest opinion based on five years of writing at HubPages.

Of all the places I have tried HubPages is still the most profitable, easy and ongoing place for me.  I run blogs, including this one, my own sites and recently affiliate marketing via CafePress and Zazzle.

It is HubPages which still gives me a dollar or so each and every day.

A dollar!

A miserable dollar you say, wondering if I have lost my senses.

The truth about internet writing and passive income is that few people earn as much as a dollar.  So I am doing quite well thank you very much.  Oh sure, I still have hopes of earning a proper living from my brilliant writing but they are the same hopes as when I started.

Very few people make any money.  Surprisingly, a huge number of them have an ego that makes them think they will.  That is where the scam companies come in.  They sell ridiculous dreams for sign-up and subscription fees and instead of even a dollar the would-be writer gets ripped off.

HubPages is an honest old-fashioned content farm.  They would prefer to be called a user-generated content site - whatever.  People write pages using the excellent FREE software HubPages provide and they share in any profits from advertising or Amazon / Ebay sales.

They pay out when you get to fifty dollars so I get a PayPal payment monthly during a good period.  Fifty dollars sounds a little better than the daily rate.

As a top-up to a pension, a minor savings plan or paying occasional bills that kind of income can help.  The cents and dollars mount up.  It is not a real income to replace a normal job.

That is the reality of the writing game.  HubPages is reasonably open and honest about it and they pay promptly and reliably.  You retain the rights to your content, can come and go as you please and as a no-risk no-investment introduction to the internet writing game it is one of the best.

A hobby that pays a little money at a time when interest rates are so low and money is tight?  If you enjoy writing and have something to say or share then HubPages might be worth a look.

How To Write Hub At Hubpages Using Hub Tools

You have an account at Hubpages and now you want to publish your first hub. Well it’s very good news. But before publishing your hub please spend 5 minutes to read the article. Start your hub: 

First click the button named start a button. You will see a dialog box. Give Title in the hub title box and make sure your title is SEO friendly. Your tile must be short and the length will not be more than 65 words. You must include your keywords in your title. Now come to the next part which is hub topic. Edit and move your capsule:

Goodbye to HubPages as Panda and Penguin Traffic Drops Further

For over two years I have been creating content at the HubPages writing site.  It has been a mostly enjoyable experience and I have met a lot of people and learnt a lot about the write content for money game.

Mostly I have learnt it doesnt pay any money but thats a lesson of sorts I suppose. 

When I first joined in October 2010 people could write any old garbage and the ranking was still good.  That was because Google unfairly favoured the large content sites over small amateurs.  Write rubbish and get paid would be a reasonable slogan at the time.

Great!  Im not proud and after a few months I was beginning to understand the sheer awfulness required to get some traffic and money.  How to do the simplest thing - with wall to wall Amazon and eBay adverts.

The first Panda strike came in 2011 and decimated HubPages traffic.  Much better awful writers than me complained and left.  Their tricks no longer worked and HubPages had lost a large amount of ranking clout.

I stayed.  I was still learning and mistakenly thought things might turn around.  They never did.  In fact, virtually every Panda release has further ground down HubPages ranking and traffic.  There have been brief periods of false recovery.

All the time I have been improving my content.  Not with tricks but techniques - to try to provide a reasonable result for my search visitor.  My stuff isnt great but compared to the rest of the web - its OK.  Yet my traffic continues to drop.

A rough estimate of the drop. If traffic from two years ago was based on my content now I would expect ten times as much.  Yes, I am that much better but my visits are worse.

As I have developed my offering and tried to provide sets of pages that have some relevance to each other - aiming for that all important stay with me angle - I have become increasingly irritated by the way HubPages interferes with that.

Despite their content being largely generic crap, they group their pages not by author, but by subject.  Search for something and the bottom of the page will have lots of links to other peoples content.  It wont be written the same, but apparently being on the same subject is good enough.  No benefit to me at all.

Sure, I get some cross fertilisation (visits) from other Hubber pages, but that is small recompense for the links promoted on my pages.  I am selling ME, not cupcake recipes.

The other huge and growing problem is the sheer weight of spam advertising on a HubPages page.  We all know that the adverts pay the bills - indeed they are the reason most of us are there - but there is surely a limit.

The pages consist of more adverts than is acceptable in my opinion.  They say I am a spam site the moment you open the search result.  HubPages have recently introduced an additional set of floating ads that accompany the poor reader as they scroll through the page.  Not only are these ads intrusive and poor - the revenue from them is not shared!  Are they trying to milk the last remaining money before they sell up?

What is ridiculous is that HubPages have been running a quality control process for months.  This is not a bad idea at all.  Five years too late of course, but at least they appear to be trying.  Just as that might be about to bear fruit in terms of Google seeing the site as less awful than it was - they add their new set of excessive adverts!

As a HubPages contributor I have no say in this.  My carefully constructed offering has over the top adverts and links to other peoples content.  I am surrounded by a sea of generic crap.  My reader is encouraged to do anything but stay with me and read another of my pages.

As Google tightens the screws on content sites each search visitor becomes more important.  I know that.  It is why I have tweaked and improved my pages as far as makes reasonable sense.  The idea being to offer the reader enjoyment and interest, and to hope that a single search hit turns into a proper visit.

HubPages are doing everything they can to thwart that aim.  That is why my bounce rate on blogs and sites is far lower than HubPages.  Yet my best content remains on their site.  It is where I have concentrated my efforts for so long.

I wonder if I had put all that effort into my own sites where would I be now?  Probably nowhere - because content writing is a hard game to crack.  At least though I would retain control.  The links and adverts would be mine - my choice as to how hard to spam my poor reader.

As Google via their Panda and Penguin algorithm changes have hammered HubPages, Squidoo and others the content farm reason for being has disappeared.  There is no ranking benefit anymore.  A revenue sharing site becomes a revenue drain - well take half and give you nothing in return for your efforts.

They do offer a site - for those who cannot face setting one up themselves.  Given that most pages consist of some text and pictures it is not really that hard to create your own web offering.  Perhaps their best attribute is that they give people like me a place to start creating content and learning the game.

Time to leave the nest and fly or crash on my own.   Forget about algorithm changes and constant hope against the reality of dropping traffic.  Create something that doesnt have wall to wall adverts and other peoples links.

Goodbye HubPages.  It was fun and I will always be grateful for that first taste and learning experience but the game has changed.
